Secret Cinema… the mystery is back in town
Secret Cinema is such a good concept... a live cinema experience. The main aim of "secret cinema" is to bring back the mystery to cinema as well as creating a live cinematic event. Exicitng...
From previous events I can see that is mixed media night where cinema, theatre and video art are all integrated to narrate a story based on the movie screened.
The themed location is always changing, from old theatres to roof-tops, and the it is kept secret until the morning of the event. Even the movie is top secret until the moment people arrive at the discovered location.
All seems to be perfectly themed. Actors bring to life the movie's plot, by entertaining the audience installations and light effects try and create a multimedia and multisensorial cinematic experience.
The secret cinema nights are promoted with a strong viral element that clearly replicates the 90s' rave culture approach, but instead of receiving a last minute text that reveals the location, now people receive an email with the address of the location. Obviously they can follow the "secret movement" on their favourite social networks...
Everything seems to be nice and accurate but I am just a bit bluffed about the "authenticity" of secrets and mystery. These events are attended by hundreds of people.
Then I am a bit concerned about the movies that they screened in the past (i.e. Ghostbusters) and think that it would be very coherent with the Secret Cinema's concept to show underground movies from the past and from the present, instead of blockbusters from the 80s. Finally I realize that, at the end of the day, the event is also a branded entertainment campaign from Nokia... that probably aims to a mass audience and not a "secret" one, and I am just wondering if the curator's choice is starting to be too much"contaminated" by "branding"...or not.
I will test it and let you know as the next Secret Cinema will take place on Sunday 15th of February at an undisclosed location in London...
Mutechlab_watch_uk will be there to watch and then share knowledge and inspiration.
